Gremyachevo is an urban-type settlement in Kulebaksky District of Nizhny Novgorod Region. It is located on the left bank of the The Tyosha River (a right tributary of the Oka). It consists of two microdistricts, Gremyachevo-1 and Gremyachevo-2, located 0.5 km apart.
According to the 2010 census, the population of Gremyachevo was 5,260.
It is known for its healing springs.
Key characteristics
The municipal entity of the settlement of Gremyachevo has a favorable geographic location: it lies relatively close to Moscow (400 km), Nizhny Novgorod (200 km), and 60 km from the village of Diveyevo. A regional highway passes through the settlement.
The settlement has two functioning churches united into a single architectural ensemble: one dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and the other to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, built in 1853. Both churches are architectural monuments of Kulebaki District.
The surrounding area is rich in dolomite and limestone, on the basis of which the "Gremyachevnerud" mining and processing plant was built in 1976. The plant's main output is crushed stone of various fractions and dolomite powder. When the plant opened, many workers arrived from neighboring villages and towns, and the population grew to 5,800. The village was given a new status — urban-type settlement. The enterprise was closed in 2000.

History
There is a popular legend about the origin of the name of the village of Gremyachevo. Its emergence is linked to Ivan the Terrible's campaign against Kazan. Chronicles say that the tsar set out with his army from Murom (Wikipedia) in July 1552. As he passed through settlements, the tsar gave many of them new names.
In our village, Ivan the Terrible was struck by the abundance of springs gushing with a rumbling ("gremuchy") murmur from beneath the steep banks of the The Tyosha River. This is how the village got its name — Gremyachevo.
Gremyachevo is known for its healing springs not only within Nizhny Novgorod Region but far beyond it as well. In the center of the village, a holy spring flows out from beneath the steep hill on which the Kazan Church stands. A chapel and a bathing house have been built here. The spring is called the Kazan Spring. On the holy days of Epiphany, the Jordan (the ice-hole for blessing water) is consecrated here. Many people come here for Epiphany to bathe and to collect Epiphany water.
Three kilometers from the Kazan Spring, on the opposite bank of the Tesha River, there is another spring. It is popularly called the Michael the Archangel Spring. Legend has it that three enormous elms once stood on this spot. On one of them there was a miraculous appearance of the Archangel Michael. After this appearance, a holy spring burst forth from beneath the elm. A chapel and a bathing house have been built here as well.
500 meters east of this spring, another spring flows out. A small chapel has been built over it. This spring is named after the icon of the Mother of God "Quick to Hear" (Skoroposlushnitsa). The origin of this spring is unusual. In the 1930s, one of the village's female residents had a dream. The dream showed the place where she needed to dig and find an icon there. The woman did so, and a spring burst forth at that spot.
At the entrance to Gremyachevo from the direction of Arzamas, one can see an information board stating that quite nearby, on the bank of the Tesha, there is yet another healing spring — dedicated to John the Theologian.
All along the bank of the Tesha River, other springs, large and small, flow as well. At any time of year, in any weather, people hasten to the holy springs to drink spring water, rest their souls, reflect on the past, and dream about the future.
