Murom is a city in Vladimir Oblast, situated on the right bank of the The Oka River, one of the oldest cities of Rus. In the context of Nizhny Novgorod's history it is mentioned as a contemporary and neighbor of Nizhny Novgorod within the Volga-Oka region: unlike Murom, Suzdal and Rostov, whose founding dates are reconstructed only from the first chronicle mention, Nizhny Novgorod was founded in a precisely dated year — 1221.
