In November 2019, the canal was contaminated with fuel: on November 19, a floating pier sank near Marata Street (Kanavinsky District), and a significant amount of fuel spilled into the Oka; oily slicks were visible along the entire canal, a strong chemical smell hung in the air, and the current carried the pollution toward the Volga.[1]

The canal is located near the Metro Bridge across the Oka; according to the Nizhny Novgorod Region Office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as of January 2019 the ice thickness there reached 15 cm — the minimum safe value for going out onto the ice — which made it one of only two places in Nizhny Novgorod where winter fishing was considered permissible.[2]

Grebnevsky Canal is an arm of the Oka River within the city limits of Nizhny Novgorod, 130 to 150 meters wide, separating Grebnevskiye Peski Island from Yarmarochnaya Embankment.
