Vagin Gennady Yakovlevich (born March 10, 1938) is a Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor of the Department of Electric Power Engineering and Power Supply at the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University n.a. R.E. Alekseev. Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.

Previous places of work
In 1959–1962 — adjuster of electrotechnological equipment at the Zavolzhye Motor Plant; in 1963–1966 — head of a group of designers in the power-supply department of the "Elektroproekt" institute; since 1966 he has worked at NSTU, and in 1976–1993 was head of the Department of Power Supply of Industrial Enterprises.

Main facts of his activity
He holds 4 inventions protected by author's certificates and patents, 2 of which were implemented at JSC "GAZ" and the "Krasny Yakor" ("Red Anchor") plant. Under the guidance of G.Ya. Vagin, the first longitudinal capacitive compensation installation in the USSR for electric welding networks was developed and installed at the "Krasny Yakor" plant in Nizhny Novgorod. Studies were conducted in the field of electromagnetic interference and the electromagnetic compatibility of electrical receivers; 2 devices for analyzing electromagnetic interference were developed — a flicker meter and a short-circuit current meter. These devices were awarded medals of the USSR Exhibition of Economic Achievements (VDNKh) and diplomas of the International Exhibition of COMECON countries in Plovdiv (1989).
From 1986 to 1992, Professor G.Ya. Vagin was a member of the Soviet working group of the International Electrotechnical Commission and took an active part in the development of international and domestic standards on electromagnetic compatibility in electric power engineering. He founded a scientific school on energy conservation in Nizhny Novgorod. From 1982 to 1992 — chairman of the energy conservation section of the city of Gorky. In 1994, on his initiative, NSTU organized the training of specialists in the specialization "Energy Conservation" on the basis of the Department of "Electric Power Engineering and Power Supply." He developed the curriculum for this specialization and wrote 5 textbooks. Professor G.Ya. Vagin is a scientific consultant at the Research Institute of "Energy-Efficient Technologies" and takes an active part in the development of federal-level scientific programs on energy conservation: development of a system for certifying energy savings at enterprises of various industries (2002); development of technologies and methods for improving energy-resource efficiency in industry, agriculture, and housing and utilities (2003); development of the targeted program "Reducing the Energy Intensity of Products of Defense-Industrial Complex Enterprises" (2004–2005); development of a concept for the use of mini-CHP plants in Russia (2006); development and creation of a standard range of mini-CHP plants (2007, 2008). Under the scientific supervision of G.Ya. Vagin, 12 candidate's dissertations and one doctoral dissertation have been defended.

More than 200 scientific works, including 16 monographs (6 of them published abroad — Bulgaria, Ukraine, Estonia) and 16 textbooks. Member of the academic council for dissertation defenses. Member of the editorial board of the journal "Industrial Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering." Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation. Laureate of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR prize in the field of energy named after Academician G.F. Proskura.
