The GAZ-31029 «Volga» is a passenger car made by the Gorky Automobile Plant, produced from 1992 to 1998. It is a further modernization of the GAZ-24-10, using body elements from the GAZ-3102.[1]
The First Volga on Free Sale
Until the early 1990s the Volga was allocated rather than sold: waiting lists, quotas, official assignment. The GAZ-31029 became the first model in the family that could simply be bought, and for several years was the most conspicuous car of its class on Russian roads.
Technically it was a compromise car: previous-generation running gear in an updated body. The factory deliberately chose speed to market over developing something new — in the conditions of the early 1990s, this kept the production line running.
The model's successor was the GAZ-3110, which replaced it in 1997.
