Department of Traumatology

The Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of Gorky Medical Institute was established on the basis of the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics in 1970; it was headed by surgeon and author of the first domestic electric dermatome, Professor Mikhail Kolokoltev [3].

The department was subsequently led by Professors Aleksandr Vereshchagin, director of the Institute of Traumatology Vyacheslav Azolov, Stanislav Vvedensky, and Svyatoslav Korolev; since 2019 it has been headed by Sergey Mlyavykh [3].

The merger in early 2018 of the Volga Federal Medical Research Center with the medical academy — from which the Volga Research Medical University grew — led to a consolidation of departments: neurosurgery was added to traumatology and orthopedics, and the department was named after Kolokoltev [3].

Death

Malyshev died on January 6, 2024, in Nizhny Novgorod, in his 84th year of life; his death was announced by the university's press service [2][4].

A farewell ceremony was held on January 8 in the ceremonial hall of the pathology department of the children's clinical hospital [4].

The course in traumatology and orthopedics that he headed was part of the continuing education and professional retraining center for specialists — the postgraduate medical training system of the Nizhny Novgorod Region [1][2].

Evgeniy Malyshev made a significant contribution to the treatment of suppurative conditions and osteomyelitis — he sought out, developed, and introduced new clinical approaches [2]
