Porshneva Elena Rafailyevna (born July 6, 1945) — head of the Department of French at the Translation Faculty of the Nizhny Novgorod State Linguistics University named after N.A. Dobrolyubov, professor of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the State University – Higher School of Economics. Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Candidate of Philological Sciences, associate professor.

Main areas of research activity

Linguodidactics, theory and methodology of professional education, linguistics, comparative studies, intercultural communication. Heads the research area of professionally oriented linguistic training for translators and interpreters. Supervises dissertation research on foreign-language teaching methodology and the professional linguistic training of specialists.

Key facts of her activity

She took part in international projects: "Improving methodological materials for teaching foreign languages in secondary and higher education" under the INTAS program – scientific exchanges between the countries of the European Community and the CIS (1996–1999) – and in the inter-ministerial project between Russia and Flanders on international cooperation in education / adaptation of the "Visiting Card" (Carte de visite) teaching and methodological package for teaching professional communication in French (parts 1–2) for Russian-speaking students (universities of Antwerp, Brussels and Nizhny Novgorod). She gave lectures and conducted practical classes at the universities of Lausanne (Switzerland), Antwerp, Brussels, Mons (Belgium), and at the translation and interpreting schools UMH (Mons), ESIT (Paris), ETI (Geneva), ISTI (Brussels), and UMB (Strasbourg).

In 2005 she worked as a visiting professor at the University of Caen (France). She spoke at the world congresses of the International Federation of Teachers of French – VIII (Lausanne, 1992), IX (Tokyo, 1996), X (Paris, 2000), XI (Atlanta, 2004) – and at international symposia – of the "Association for Intercultural Studies" (Geneva, 2003), "Ways of Improving the Professional Training of Translators and Interpreters – 2004" (Rennes, France), "The Contribution of the Social Sciences to Linguodidactics – 2005" (Cergy-Pontoise, France).

Publications

Author and co-author of 140 scholarly works (including textbooks and teaching and methodological packages) published in regional, national and foreign periodicals.

Membership in scientific and public organizations

Member of the International Federation of Teachers of French, chair of the Interregional Public Association of Teachers of French, vice-president of the public organization "Alliance Française – Nizhny Novgorod". In 1994–1997 – expert in linguodidactics for the federal program "Reform of Foreign Language Teaching and Retraining of Foreign Language Teachers". Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
