On the night of October 8–9, 2026, Nizhny Novgorod Region came under attack by unmanned aerial vehicles. During the repulsion of the raid, a fighter of the Bars-NN volunteer detachment was killed — the first combat loss in the detachment's history.[1][2]

Course of events

The attack was repelled jointly by forces of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Rosgvardia (National Guard), and fighters of the Bars-NN detachment.[2] No civilians were injured by falling debris from the downed drones, and damage to the region's infrastructure was assessed as minimal.[1][3] Nevertheless, one of the Bars-NN servicemen was killed while on combat duty.[4]

Death of the fighter

Governor Gleb Nikitin announced the death of the serviceman in his MAX channel on the morning of October 9, 2026.[1] The name of the deceased was not given in official reports. He is survived by his wife and two sons.[3] Nikitin called this loss the first in the history of the Bars-NN detachment and promised to provide the family with all necessary assistance and support, and to give the fighter himself due honors.[5] "We grieve together with all the relatives and loved ones of our hero. Eternal memory to the defender of his small Motherland," the governor wrote.[2] The head of the region also thanked the entire Bars-NN detachment, stressing the value of the contribution of the volunteers "who answer the call of their hearts and go out on combat duty."[6]

The attack on October 9, 2026, was not the first time people had been killed in Nizhny Novgorod Region as a result of drone strikes: earlier, on June 24, the governor reported two civilians killed, and on July 2, one more.[4] However, October 9 was the first time that a serviceman directly involved in the region's counter-drone defense was killed.[2]
