Dmitry Ivanovich Ryzhakov (1927–2018) was a Soviet and Russian medical scientist specializing in pathological physiology; professor, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation. He spent most of his life working in Gorky / Nizhny Novgorod, where for several decades he helped shape the development of medical education and science in the region.[1]
Biography and education
He was born in 1927 in the village of Deryabino in Varnavinsky District of Gorky Oblast. During the The Great Patriotic War he began working at the age of fourteen. In 1948 he graduated from the Gorky River College, after which he enrolled at the Gorky Medical Institute and graduated with honors in 1954.[1]
Scientific and academic career
In 1971 he founded and headed the Central Research Laboratory of the Gorky Medical Institute. For more than 30 years he headed the Department of Pathological Physiology; for 18 years he served as vice-rector of the institute for academic affairs. He was chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Scientific Society of Pathophysiologists. Until the end of his life he retained the position of consulting professor at the Department of Pathological Physiology of the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (PIMU).[1]
He authored more than 210 published scientific works and 8 inventions. Under his scientific supervision, 7 doctoral and 27 candidate dissertations were defended.[1]
Titles and recognition
Ryzhakov was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, the title of Honorary Worker of Higher Education of Russia, as well as the honorary title of Honored Professor of the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NizhGMA).[1]
Death
He died on June 7, 2018, in Nizhny Novgorod at the age of 91. A civil funeral service was held on June 9 in the mourning hall of the pathology department of the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital.[1]
