Wastelands are undeveloped or sparsely settled tracts within the city limits of Nizhny Novgorod that persist despite the dense urban fabric around them. The city is notable for such spaces standing alongside residential quarters and industrial sites: the best-known example is the The Rapist's Valley, an extensive unsettled tract between the Petrovsky Plant and Usilov Street. Standing apart are the Dyatlovy Gory — a high bluff at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga that retains its undeveloped character thanks to the terrain.
