Busygin Avenue is a street in the Avtozavodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, one of the main thoroughfares of the Zarechka part of the city.

Location and Significance

The avenue is among the main streets of the Avtozavodsky District, alongside Oktyabrya Avenue, Molodezhny Avenue, Kirov Avenue, Ilicha Avenue, as well as Dyakonov Street, Perekhodnikov Street, Gaydar Street, Chelyuskintsev Street, Sportivnaya Street, and others. The avenue is named after Aleksandr Kharitonovich Busygin — a blacksmith at the Gorky Automobile Plant and a pioneer of the Stakhanovite movement in mechanical engineering: in September 1935 he set a record for forging crankshafts, forging 966 shafts on September 11 against a quota of 675, and 1,001 shafts on September 13. The street underwent several name changes: it was originally called Kommunalnaya, then Tavricheskaya; in 1985, while Aleksandr Busygin was still alive, it was renamed an avenue, and on February 19 of that same year the blacksmith passed away.

The Severny (Northern) Settlement, to which the avenue belongs, was laid out in the 1930s as a barracks-style development; in 1967 the Giprogor RSFSR institute drew up a detailed planning scheme for a new Severny Settlement, providing for the construction of one hundred multi-storey buildings, schools, kindergartens, and shops, and by 1975 seventy-five prefabricated panel and twenty-five brick multi-storey buildings had been erected.

On Oktyabrya Avenue, near the GAZ Veterans' House, a monument to Busygin has been erected, and a memorial plaque marks building No. 22 on Busygin Avenue, where he lived from 1959 to 1984. A boulevard stretches along the avenue from Perekhodnikov Street to Permyakov Street; along its length are various commercial and social infrastructure facilities, and since the late 1950s the Cultural Center of the Reinforced Concrete Structures Plant has served as the cultural hub of the district.[2][1][1][1][1]
