The Bogoyavlenskaya Estate (official name — the estate of Ye. I. Bogoyavlenskaya) is a two-storey brick building erected in 1871 and located in Nizhny Novgorod at Bolshaya Pecherskaya Street, house 41. It is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. The building is significant for the city's history above all as the place where, in 1894, the first lending library-reading room in Nizhny Novgorod opened.[2]

History

The building was erected in 1871 to a design by the Nizhny Novgorod architect Ivan Kostryukov.[2] It operated until 1910, after which it was moved to the Narodny Dom (People's House) on Ostrozhnaya Square.[2]

Technical condition and disrepair

By 2025 the building had not undergone a major overhaul in more than 40 years. Residents reported a leaking roof, a crumbling facade, faulty utility systems, sagging of the inter-floor slabs and of the staircase to the second floor. For two winters in a row, heating was cut off because of breakdowns in the utility lines.[1] A major overhaul was not scheduled to take place before 2032.[2]

Residents repeatedly filed complaints with various agencies, but without result.[2] In July 2025, Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, instructed Alexander Dynkov, acting head of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for Nizhny Novgorod Region, to report on the progress and results of the procedural inquiry launched over the residents' complaints. The matter was placed under the central office's direct oversight.[2]

In September 2025, activists of the regional branch of the Popular Front reported that specialized organizations and agencies had inspected the building and found it to be unsafe. The corresponding report was submitted City Hall for further decisions.[1]
