The Nizhny Novgorod Velozavod (Bicycle Factory), OJSC "Velozavod" — one of the structural subdivisions of GAZ. It manufactured the "Shkolnik" ("Schoolboy") bicycle (priced at 24–25 rubles in Soviet times) and road bicycles. Now closed and in ruins.

Background

OJSC "Velozavod" is a subsidiary of OJSC "Gorky Automobile Plant". It has now been declared bankrupt and has been up for sale for several years. Production ceased in 2004.

The condition of the shops throughout the complex is fairly good, and remnants of equipment survive in places. The administrative buildings are also in quite decent condition.

The complex itself is fairly well guarded — two fences with barbed wire, a guard post at the checkpoint and (occasionally) patrols with dogs, so if you decide to visit this site, be extremely careful.
