The Arzamas School of Trade Apprentices was a vocational educational institution in Arzamas that operated from March 11, 1902, to July 1, 1917. It was founded under the law of December 20, 1893, on the establishment of a special type of vocational school — schools of trade apprentices. It began actual operations on July 1, 1903, and was among the institutions forming the vocational education system in the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate.[1]
Organization and Educational Process
The school was under the authority of a teacher-inspector subordinate to the director of public schools of Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. Boys aged 11–14 with a primary education were admitted. The institution's primary purpose was to train craftsmen capable of independently managing small workshops and trade establishments.[1]
As of 1913, the school had three classes (divisions): metalworking, carpentry, and foundry. The course of study lasted three years of compulsory instruction plus one additional (fourth) year of practical training. The school operated a free student canteen maintained through charitable donations and subsidies from the school's special funds.[1]
Transformations after 1917
On July 1, 1917, the school was reorganized into the Arzamas Trade School of Agricultural Machinery and Repair, intended to train skilled workers in the manufacture and repair of agricultural machinery. During the period 1920–1936, the school underwent a series of reorganizations, after which a technical college of agricultural mechanization and electrification was established on its basis. This institution was subsequently named the Arzamas Agricultural College after V. A. Novikov and has its own archival collection (R-343).[1]
Archival Collection
The school's documents are held at the State Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod Region (Arzamas) as collection no. 157, inventory no. 1, covering the period from 1903 to 1936. The collection was received by the Arzamas State Archive on February 16, 1937. A small portion of the documents — 10 storage units from 1899–1915 — is held at the Central Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The collection contains information on the school's staff, student admissions, the activities of the board of trustees, the opening of the foundry workshop, the construction and repair of buildings, annual reports, accounting documents, and materials on final and promotion examinations.[1]
