Gor Anna Markovna (born 22 May 1956, Gorky) is an art historian and cultural figure, director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the National Center for Contemporary Arts "Arsenal" in 1997–2023, later deputy director of the same institution (2023–2024). One of the founders of "Arsenal" and of the organizers of a contemporary cultural space in Nizhny Novgorod. Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod since 2019.[2]

Education and early career

Anna Gor graduated from the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture with a degree in "theory and history of art" (1984).[3] Even before graduating, from 1975 to 1992, she worked at the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum — first as a tour guide, then as head of the visitor engagement department.[3] At the same time, from 1984 to 1992, she lectured on the history of fine art at the Gorky Dobrolyubov State Linguistic University and the State Agricultural Academy.[3]

"Arsenal": founding and development

In 1992, together with Lyubov Saprykina, Anna Gor organized the Nizhny Novgorod regional public organization "Center for Contemporary Culture 'Cariatida'". In 1997, the center was transformed into the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the National Center for Contemporary Arts.[1] Until 2003, the team sought to obtain the The Kremlin — a former military warehouse where staff maps and documents had been stored for decades. Having received the building, they began restoration, completed in 2015.[1] Saprykina formulated the institution's concept as "a laboratory of the future on the territory of the past."[1]

Under Gor's leadership, "Arsenal" became a venue for contemporary exhibitions and lectures, gaining recognition among the museum community of several countries. In 2020, the institution joined the Volga-Vyatka branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, which opened the possibility of hosting major projects from the capital.[1] On the basis of "Arsenal," at Gor's initiative, the Resource Center for Cultural Innovation was created; the strategic program "Cultural District" and the research program "Nizhny Novgorod Landscapes: An Artistic Forecast" are being implemented.[2]

In 2000–2007, Gor headed the federal program "Cultural Capital of the Volga Region".[3] She is the author of more than 150 publications on fine art and cultural policy, a curator and producer of numerous exhibition projects, chair of the Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the Association of Art Historians, and a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA, Paris).[2][3]

Recognition and awards

In 2012, Gor was elected an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.[3] In 2014, she was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation.[3] In 2003, France awarded her the Order of the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres).[2][3] In 2015, she became a Nizhny Novgorod Prize — for the restoration and adaptation of the Arsenal building in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.[2] Other awards include a Certificate of Honor and a commendation from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.[2] The title "Honorary Citizen of the city of Nizhny Novgorod" was conferred by City Council on 16 July 2019 (No. 132).[2]
