Alexander Nikolayevich Shamov (b. October 1, 1952) is a professor of the Department of Linguodidactics and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages at the Nizhny Novgorod State Linguistic University named after N.A. Dobrolyubov, and a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences.
Education
Graduated from the Gorky State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages named after N.A. Dobrolyubov, with the qualification "teacher of German and English," in 1978.
Main areas of research
Teaching foreign languages in various types of educational institutions, problems of language and culture, innovative technologies in foreign-language teaching, early foreign-language instruction (kindergarten, primary school). He is pursuing research on the theme "A Cognitive Approach to Teaching Foreign Languages."
Publications
Author of more than 120 scholarly works, including 4 monographs and 10 textbooks and study guides. Under A.N. Shamov's academic supervision, one doctoral and 12 candidate dissertations have been defended. He is editor-in-chief of an inter-university collection of scholarly articles on the theme "Cognitive Processes and Their Consideration in Teaching Foreign Languages." Seven collections in this series have been published. He is a regular contributor to the leading professional journal "Foreign Languages at School" (Moscow). He also collaborates with the journals "Pedagogicheskoye obozreniye" ("Pedagogical Review") and "Nizhegorodskoye obrazovaniye" ("Nizhny Novgorod Education") (NIRO). For 15 years he has headed the educational programs "Foreign Language for Everyone" (municipal foreign-language courses for all population groups) and "Translator in Professional Communication." In the 1993–1994 academic year he did an internship at the Institute for Innovation Research at the Ruhr University (Bochum, Germany), specializing in "management and marketing in education." Under a cooperation agreement between NGLU named after N.A. Dobrolyubov and the Institute of Foreign Languages of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Bochum, Germany), he taught Russian as a foreign language in 1995–1996. He took an active part in developing the conceptual foundations of a Russian-language textbook for foreigners at the third level of instruction, and in developing specific didactic materials to fill out the content of this textbook.
