Zayarskaya Street — a street in Sovetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod. It branches off from Beketov Street and leads to a gardening area in the green zone of Marina Roscha Cemetery; at the intersection with Beketov Street there is a public transport stop of the same name.[1][2]
Where it runs
Zayarskaya is a short street on the southern edge of the upper part of the city, beyond the tram line along Beketov Street. Beyond it begin gardens and forest: Marina Roscha is a large forest park that surrounds Schelokovsky Khutor on all sides and extends southward toward Nartov Square and the lane of the same name.[2]
The street marks the transport boundary between residential blocks and the green zone, which makes the Beketov–Zayarskaya intersection its main node.[1][3]
The city's first talking traffic light
On 31 July 2023, the city of Nizhny Novgorod's first traffic light with voice announcements began operating at the intersection of Beketov and Zayarskaya Streets: when the green light comes on, pedestrians are told by voice exactly which street they are permitted to cross.[1]
The location was no coincidence — the crossing is used by pupils of a residential school for blind and visually impaired children, and the device allows them to cross the road without an accompanying adult. The installation was announced by Mayor Yuri Shalabayev; the pilot traffic light's performance was to be analyzed with a view to rolling out the experience on other streets.[1]
Residential school for blind children
Adjacent to the street operates the regional special correctional residential school for blind and visually impaired children. On 22 June 2022, the school sports club Dvizheniye ("Movement") opened there — a voluntary association of pupils, teachers, and parents.[4]
The club offers goalball, mini-football, athletics, blind judo, and showdown. According to the vice-president of the Federation of Sport for the Blind, there are only three such school clubs in Russia, and the Nizhny Novgorod one is among them; school director Irina Budarina stated that the club would make it possible to build a unified physical education and sports environment.[4]
The sports club is called Dvizheniye — "Movement" — and it's about overcoming yourself[4]
Building No. 4 and the polyclinic
The ground floor of building No. 4 on Zayarskaya Street houses City Polyclinic No. 35. In the summer of 2023 it was undergoing a major overhaul: the consulting rooms were renovated and work then moved to the corridor.[5]
Residents of the building also asked for the yard to be tidied up — restoring the paved path at the end of the building, creating green areas, installing bins and benches, and refreshing the polyclinic's façade. The administration replied that no landscaping had been planned for 2023, but that the area could be included in the comfortable urban environment improvement programme or put to a public vote under the "You Decide!" initiative.[5]
Tram tracks
In spring 2025 the section of Beketov Street from Nartov Lane to Zayarskaya Street was completely overhauled: the contractor relaid the tram tracks and resurfaced the road over 240 metres. The structure was built on a monolithic concrete slab to reduce vibration and noise for the nearby residential buildings.[3]
Traffic restrictions on this section were lifted on 19 April 2025; at the same time, work was completed on the stretch from Kuznechikhinskaya Street to Ussuriyskaya Street and from the Nartov–Beketov intersection to Nartov Lane.[3]
