Yury Yefimovich Gurevich (born 6 May 1967, Vyazma, Smolensk Oblast) is a Russian musician, teacher and conductor, and rector of the Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatoire. He has held the post of rector since June 2018; he was entrusted with the duties of acting rector from December 2017.[1][2] Honoured Art Worker of the Russian Federation, Nizhny Novgorod Prize.[1]

Education and academic career

In 1993 Gurevich graduated from the Glinka Conservatory, studying bayan under Professor V. I. Golubnichy and conducting under Professor M. A. Samorukova; in 1995 he completed a postgraduate assistantship (assistentura-stazhirovka).[2] He also studied composition as an elective.[1]

Since 1993 he has worked at the Conservatoire's Department of Folk Instruments, rising from associate professor (2007) to full professor (2011) and head of department.[2][1] He is active as a teacher, conductor and performer, and is one of the founders of the "Ars mobile" creative ensemble.[2]

Performing career

Since 1998 Gurevich has directed the Conservatoire's Orchestra of Bayans and Accordions.[2] Under his direction the ensemble became laureate of the All-Russian Chamber Ensemble Competitions in Syzran (1999 and 2001) and of international competitions: the "Golden Accordion" in New York (2001) and in Lanciano (Italy, 2004, first prize).[2]

Leadership of the Conservatoire

In December 2017, at an expanded meeting of the Conservatoire's Academic Council held on 15 December, Gurevich was appointed acting rector.[2] He succeeded People's Artist of the Russian Federation Fertelmeister Eduard Borisovich, who had led the Conservatoire for 22 years — from 1996 — and had been elected rector in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011; after handing over his powers, Fertelmeister became the Conservatoire's president.[2] Gurevich has been rector since June 2018.[1]

The building of the Conservatoire he heads is a cultural heritage site of federal significance. The Conservatoire trains students under bachelor's, specialist, master's, postgraduate and doctoral programmes and has its own dissertation council.

Honours

Gurevich has been awarded the title of Honoured Art Worker of the Russian Federation.[1] In 2025 he became a laureate of the Nizhny Novgorod Prize in the category "Event in Culture and the Arts".[1]
