Tur Evgeny Yakovlevich (28 April 1928, Ufa — 21 May 2020, Nizhny Novgorod) was a Soviet and Russian sportsman and coach, one of the leading figures of mountaineering and rock climbing in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) Region in the second half of the 20th century.[2]
Sporting and coaching career
He practiced mountaineering as an athlete, later moving into coaching work in rock climbing. In 1956 he was awarded the title of Master of Sports of the USSR (conferred 5 November 1956). He held the all-Union referee qualification in rock climbing.[2] He took an active part in organizing the mountaineering movement in the region: he headed the Mountaineering Federation of Gorky Region and sat on the presidium of the USSR Mountaineering Federation.[2] Avtozavod climbers, whose history was documented by the library system of the Avtozavodsky District, developed their sport partly within the context of the general regional federation that Tur headed.[1]
Academic and teaching career
Alongside his sporting work, he pursued an academic career: he was an associate professor and head of a department at the Gorky Institute of Agriculture, and held the academic degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences.[2]
Later years
He died on 21 May 2020 in Nizhny Novgorod at the age of 92.[2]
