The Route along the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin Wall is a pedestrian tourist route laid out along the top of the The Kremlin. It is the only circular route of its kind among all kremlins in Russia, and it exceeds similar routes in other Russian kremlins in length. The route is part of the museum complex managed by the Nizhny Novgorod State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve (NGIAMZ).
Layout of the Route
The pedestrian path covers all the kremlin's towers around its perimeter, which is what makes it circular. The round towers are equipped with observation platforms offering views of the surrounding area. The rectangular towers house permanent museum exhibitions.
Significance
The circular nature of the route sets the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin apart from other Russian fortresses: in no other kremlin in Russia can a visitor walk the entire fortress wall in a closed loop. The route is one of the kremlin's main tourist attractions; in 2022 the kremlin was among the country's most visited museum complexes, with NGIAMZ as a whole receiving more than one million visitors and ranking 13th by attendance among Russia's museums.
