Key facts of his career

Through his research he made a substantial contribution to unraveling the epizootology, etiology and pathogenesis of gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases in calves, which became a new direction and theoretical foundation for improving control measures and developing new methods and means of prevention and therapy, now successfully applied in many regions of the Russian Federation and countries of the CIS. Under his leadership and with his direct participation, a number of priority studies were carried out, resulting in the development and, in the established manner, the introduction into production of a scientifically grounded system for rearing and raising calves and more than 20 new complex therapeutic and preventive preparations serving as rehydration, detoxification, antimicrobial agents and agents that increase the body's natural resistance.

The preparations Poliminezol, Glucofuracid, Glucohemovit, Sulfatetrin, Furacyclin, Tetrasulfin, Glucofur, Sulfacin, Biozin, Novosulgin, Glucopyridazine, Furazol and others were exhibited at the USSR VDNKh, the VVTs, and the "Achievements of Science and Technology of the Agro-Industrial Complex of Russia" exhibition, where they received high praise and were included in the consolidated catalogue of veterinary products recommended for wide use. At the base of the NIVI NZ RF, more than 600 tonnes of preparations were manufactured and supplied to farms in Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir, Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Tyumen, Irkutsk and other regions. Their use as part of a comprehensive system makes it possible to achieve healthy young livestock and its full preservation.

Under the leadership and with the direct participation of V.V. Sochnev, scientifically grounded systems of anti-brucellosis, anti-yersiniosis and anti-leptospirosis measures were developed for the Non-Black-Earth zone of the Russian Federation and for the Middle and Lower Volga region. A targeted, scientifically grounded programme was developed for eliminating brucellosis and rabies infection in the Lower Volga region. A scientific approach was substantiated and put into practice for measuring the territorial, temporal, population and subpopulation boundaries within which a number of infectious parasitic systems operate, which made it possible to forecast and prevent the development of epizootics while simultaneously carrying out preventive measures comprehensively and at the lowest possible cost. He is the author and co-author of inventions protected by 27 author's certificates and 33 Russian Federation patents, and of 439 scientific papers, including 16 monographs, reference books and methodological manuals.

Under V.V. Sochnev's scientific supervision, 16 doctoral and 64 candidate dissertations were defended. He is chairman of the Council for the Defense of Doctoral Dissertations and a member of the expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission (VAK) of the Russian Federation. He has been elected a member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, a member of the bureau of the veterinary medicine department, deputy chairman of the section on infectious diseases of animals, and a member of the pharmaceutical council and the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. He is a full member of the Petrovsky Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a two-time laureate of the Russian Federation Government Prize.
