Vasily Shuvaev is a hematologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and professor at the Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education. Since September 2026, he has headed the Center for Hematology and Chemotherapy, established on the basis of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital named after N. A. Semashko.[2]
Heading the Center for Hematology and Chemotherapy
The Center for Hematology and Chemotherapy began operations on September 29, 2026, on the basis of the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital and was granted the status of a regional third-level center. The Center's opening took place within the framework of the national project "Long and Active Life."[4][1] Shuvaev's invitation to serve as head was intended to strengthen the expert and scientific-clinical component of the regional hematological service.[2]
The Center's structure comprises three areas: outpatient hematologist consultations (primary diagnostics and follow-up care), a day hospital for drug, targeted, immune, transfusion, and supportive therapy without round-the-clock hospitalization, and a hematology ward for treating patients with complex conditions and complications.[2][3] The Center operates on a "single window" principle: complex and newly identified cases are referred there centrally for prompt diagnosis confirmation at collegial consultations. Unified monitoring of diagnostic and referral timelines will allow comprehensive quality control at every stage — from the initial visit through to rehabilitation.[4][2]
Shuvaev described the unit's mission as transforming the very system of care delivery: "The patient must enter a unified clinical pathway, where the diagnosis is confirmed using modern methods, the treatment approach is determined collegially, and care is provided at the level required in each specific case." Patients in the Nizhny Novgorod Region will gain access to high-technology treatment within the Center without needing to travel to other cities.[4][2]
Areas of Development
The Center under Shuvaev's leadership plans to develop high-dose chemotherapy and transplantation technologies, including autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, as well as to introduce treatment methods used at leading federal centers.[1][2] Concurrently, educational and scientific-methodological activities are planned: training physicians from the region, organizing patient schools, participating in clinical trials, and collaborating with federal medical institutions.[2][3] In the future, the Center will join the "Gorod Zdorovya" (City of Health) medical cluster, which brings together the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital and the oncology center.[3]
