Tram Route No. 417 is a city tram route in Nizhny Novgorod running through the Leninsky District. It connects Moskovsky Rail Terminal with Aksakov Street, passing through an extensive area of private houses where the tram remains one of the few forms of public transport.[2]

Route and history

Part of the route's line — from the park named after May 1 to Krasnaya Etna — was laid about a hundred years ago.[2] The route runs through residential blocks and the private-house area of the Leninsky District, where the tram has historically been the most important means of transport for residents.[1]

Track reconstruction, 2025-2026

In May 2025, large-scale reconstruction of the tram tracks began on the section from the park named after May 1 to Aksakov Street. Route No. 417 service was suspended for the duration of the work.[2] The contractor was OOO Ekologicheskie Proekty (Environmental Projects LLC) — the organization that signed the concession agreement for modernizing the entire city tram network, which envisages replacing about 150 km of track, upgrading three depots and 15 traction substations, and procuring 170 new tram cars.[3]

During the work on the more than 12-km single-track section, the rail bed, track superstructure, and overhead contact system with its supports were completely replaced. Builders faced significant difficulties: dense urban development and the route's intersections with utility lines required additional protection for gas pipelines and other networks, as well as coordination of the work with city services. Weather conditions also affected the reconstruction timeline.[3]

By August 2026 the reconstruction was complete. Yevgeny Grabovsky, director of OOO Ekologicheskie Proekty, reported the complete replacement of the track superstructure and overhead contact system along the entire section.[2] The results of the work were inspected by Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin, Deputy Governor Sergei Morozov, and Deputy Chairman of the regional government Pavel Savateyev.[1]

Traffic pattern after reconstruction

After the work was completed, Route No. 417 returned to the renovated tracks after a year-long break. Trams once again run from Moskovsky Rail Terminal to Aksakov Street and back.[4] Residents of the district attribute the resumption of service to increased speed and carrying capacity, as well as greater comfort thanks to the new tram cars.[2]
