As of January 1, 1896, out of 1,658,957 residents of Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, there were 10,875 nobles: 0.65%.
The nobles who became most renowned on Nizhny Novgorod land: Prince Prince Pozharsky, military leader of the Nizhny Novgorod Militia, and Yuri Vsevolodovich, founder of the The Principality of Nizhny Novgorod.
Among the well-known noble families one can name the The Demidovs of Nizhny Novgorod, the Princes Vorotynsky, Gruzinsky, and others.
Present-day situation
In the 1990s B.M. Sokolov-Chelyshev Nizhny Novgorod Monarchist Center, which had existed for several years in the medieval period, and, in order to attract supporters and sponsors, began — acting in his own name as regent — to hand out noble titles (not Russian ones, but those of the Principality of Nizhny Novgorod).

A pseudo-oath.
We recently received a letter from N.N. Tyurina, a member of the leadership of the Nizhny Novgorod Monarchist Center. Nina Nikolaevna informed us of an anti-canonical act — the taking of a so-called "oath of allegiance to Empress Maria Vladimirovna" — carried out by representatives of the "Interregional (Russian) Monarchist Movement (RMD)," headed by a man calling himself K.K. Nemirovich-Danchenko. Let us quote from the letter: "I will dwell very briefly on the event connected with the taking of the oath of allegiance to Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna. I had been instructed by the Nizhny Novgorod Noble Assembly (NDS) to gather everyone wishing to take part in this act on May 11 at the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael. Beforehand, by telephone, I informed the Marshal of the NDS, O.N. Polyanskaya, the chairman of the court of honor, Prince P.A. Kugushev, and the entire membership of the Noble Assembly of the conditions under which it could be legitimate; I.B. Grigoryev, a member of the "RMD," was also aware of them. Six people arrived at the Cathedral; each in turn read out the oath, followed by kissing the icon of the Mother of God. Father Vladimir refused to take part in this. I was simply an observer, and my refusal greatly surprised and upset I.B. Grigoryev. He filmed all six of them on video, warmly congratulated them all, handed out the RMD's information bulletin and, having said goodbye, they quickly dispersed. A witness to this act was an ordinary employee of the Cathedral, who kept repeating: "I don't understand any of this, what an outrage." And the only thing I could not understand was: why did Mr. Grigoryev take it upon himself to stand in for the priest?" We sent an inquiry to the Ruling Bishop, Archbishop of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas and Administrator of the Tambov Diocese, Evgeny, in which we asked His Eminence to look into this blasphemous act. |
