The Sozvezdiye Olympic Reserve Wrestling Sports School is a municipal budget institution of supplementary education in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Region, founded in 2007. The school specializes in judo, sumo, sambo, and Greco-Roman wrestling, and is one of the leading wrestling training centers in the region.[3]

History

The school was opened in 2007 in Nizhny Novgorod by order of Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Valery Shantsev. The initiator of its creation and its first director was Mikhail Arshinov — Mikhail Arshinov, a Master of Sports of the USSR, Honored Coach of Russia, international-category referee in judo and sumo, and Honorary Citizen of Dzerzhinsk.[4] Initially, the school operated a network of six regional branches — in Dzerzhinsk, Kstovo, Lyskovo, Pavlovo, Semyonov, and Vyksa — and a staff of 20 coaches.[4]

In 2014, following the reorganization of the funding system for supplementary education institutions and the transfer of Olympic reserve sports schools to municipal jurisdiction, the school relocated to Dzerzhinsk: the city authorities took it under their administration while ensuring the institution retained its independence.[4] After the move, the former building of the Otechestvo Patriotic Education Center on Matrosov Street came under the school's operational management. In 2016, a renovation was completed there: a training hall, changing rooms, showers, coaches' rooms, and equipment rooms were added.[4] The renovation work was carried out primarily by the school's own staff, with partial support from sponsors who provided construction materials and engineering equipment.[4]

The organization was legally registered on July 30, 2007 (OGRN 1075260021814). It was formerly known as the Sozvezdiye Wrestling Sports School and was subsequently renamed an Olympic reserve sports school. The founder is the municipal entity — the Dzerzhinsk Urban District.[3]

Activities and Infrastructure

The school operates across three facilities: on Oktyabrskaya Street (official registered address: 43B Oktyabrskaya Street), Matrosova Street, and Okskaya Embankment.[4] The school's disciplines include judo, sumo, sambo, and Greco-Roman wrestling; approximately 900 people train there, including athletes with disabilities.[2] The staff includes 15 coaches.[4] The school is headed by Svetlana Panteleeva, Honored Master of Sport of Russia, world and European champion in sumo, and medalist at the European Judo Championship.[2]

Several alumni of the school serve on the coaching and administrative staff. Among them: Tatyana Kuvshinova — the first Honored Master of Sport in judo in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, deputy director for sports and public activities; Evgeniya Zhmaeva — International Master of Sport, world and European champion in sambo; Elena Knyazeva — International Master of Sport in sambo, champion of Russia and Europe; Svetlana Lavrenova — deputy director for athletic training; and senior instructor-methodologist Olga Pautova.[4]

Achievements

Over the years, the school has produced two Honored Masters of Sport of Russia, ten International Masters of Sport, and more than fifty Masters of Sport. The total number of medals won has exceeded 1,025.[2] The school's athletes regularly compete in Russian championships and cups, competitions within the Volga Federal District, and international judo and sumo tournaments.[1]

Development Prospects

In September 2026, the school was visited by Evgeniy Lyulin, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, together with regional parliament deputy Yuliya Garevskaya and representatives of the municipal administration.[2] The inspection revealed a number of infrastructure problems: a dilapidated facade, a roof in need of replacement, and an inadequate ventilation system. Director Svetlana Panteleeva noted that the current facilities do not allow for the requisite number of wrestling mats or for hosting high-level tournaments on site.[2] Following the visit, plans were announced to construct a new martial arts center in Dzerzhinsk, featuring a large competition hall and a recovery center for athletes.[2]
