Sergey Petrovich Trubetskoy (1790–1860) was a prince, Decembrist, colonel, and one of the organizers of the secret societies of the Decembrist movement. He was born on September 9, 1790 (August 29, Old Style) in Nizhny Novgorod, into the family of Prince Pyotr Sergeyevich Trubetskoy, marshal of the nobility of the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, and Princess Darya Aleksandrovna Gruzinskaya.[1]

Origins and Early Years

The nobility of his family, his parents' standing at court, and the merits of his ancestors opened broad career opportunities for Sergey Trubetskoy. He took part in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Russian army's campaigns abroad.[1]

Involvement in the Decembrist Movement

Trubetskoy became one of the founders and organizers of three successive secret societies. In 1816 he was among the founders of the "Union of Salvation," the first Decembrist organization. He later took part in creating the "Union of Welfare" (1818–1821), and then the Northern Society, formed in Saint Petersburg in 1821. The Supreme Duma of the Northern Society included N. M. Muravyov, Trubetskoy, and E. P. Obolensky.[1]

Before the uprising of December 14, 1825, Trubetskoy was chosen as dictator, the nominal leader of the action. However, he did not appear on Senate Square, which was one of the reasons for the uprising's failure.[1]

Conviction and Exile

Following the investigation, Trubetskoy was sentenced to penal servitude for life. From 1826 he was held at the Nerchinsk mines. In 1839 he was transferred to a settlement in Irkutsk Governorate, where he remained until 1856. In exile he wrote his "Notes," which became an important source on the history of the Decembrist movement.[1]

The Nizhny Novgorod Connection

Trubetskoy's only documented connection to Nizhny Novgorod is his birth there: his father, Prince Pyotr Sergeyevich Trubetskoy, held the post of marshal of the nobility of the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate at the time.[1]
