The Sarov Museum of History and Local Lore is a Sarov, operating under director Nina Leonidovna Ostriyanskaya, who has headed the institution since 1996. The museum is located at 48 Prospekt Mira; it is open from 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays; admission costs approximately 100 rubles, and a group excursion approximately 500 rubles.[2] An art salon operates on the museum's premises.

The museum's mission is to preserve and make use of the city's historical and cultural heritage, to develop the cultural and artistic traditions of the local population, and to promote folk crafts and trades.[1]
The decision to establish a local history museum in Sarov was made in 1956. The initial exhibition, "Wildlife of Our Region," was housed in the building of the local forestry enterprise; subsequently, an exhibition entitled "The History of Life on Earth" was created and attracted considerable interest among children. In search of exhibits reflecting the city's history, museum staff traveled to Arzamas and Gorky; as a result, a handwritten map of the Sarov Forest Estate dating from 1867 was acquired. In 1967, the museum was given the premises of the former Moskva cinema, where the first exhibition of artists from Gorky was held.[1]
The museum's permanent exhibition includes a recreation of the apartment of Academician Yu. B. Khariton, as well as ancient icons and manuscripts connected with the city's history as a scientific center.[2]
