Sakharov Museum — an apartment in a standard Soviet "candle" high-rise, where, under KGB surveillance, Academician Sakharov lived and worked during his seven-year exile in Gorky — a nuclear physicist and famous public figure, and, among other things, the author of the theory of convergence and the concept of the The Internet. Full name: the A. D. Sakharov Memorial Apartment Museum.

Located in Nizhny Novgorod at Gagarin Avenue, 214 (this part of Gagarin Avenue was renamed Sakharov Avenue).

The Essence of the Phenomenon

A cultural center. Together with the Nizhny Novgorod Intelligentsia Museum-Reserve, one of the least visited museums in the city.

Background

The museum opened in 1991 in the apartment where the scientist served seven years of political exile (1980—1987).

Exhibition

The museum recreates the setting and part of the interior of Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov's apartment.

The exhibition hall displays materials on the scientist's life and work during his time at the city of Sarov federal nuclear center, and screens the film "Andrei Sakharov — the Classified Years".

For schoolchildren, the museum staff have developed a series of thematic talks and lectures covering A. D. Sakharov's life's work:

  • "The Gorky Exile"

Interesting Facts

  • Every year on December 14, Sakharov's memorial day, his death mask is put on display.
  • Throughout A. Sakharov's Gorky exile, a campaign in his defense was under way in many countries around the world. In particular, a square five minutes' walk from the White House, where the Soviet embassy in Washington was located, was renamed "Sakharov Plaza".
