Alexander Semyonovich Poznansky (18 (31) January 1903 — 8 June 1974) was a Soviet psychiatrist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and professor. He was born in Kryvyi Rih (now Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine). His connection to the Nizhny Novgorod region was chiefly through his period of work at the Gorky Medical Institute (1944–1959); he is buried in Nizhny Novgorod.[3]
Education and Early Career
In 1927 Poznansky graduated from the Odessa Medical Institute. After graduating, he worked as a physician at a narcological dispensary and a psychiatric clinic in Odessa (1927–1931), then moved to the Ukrainian Psychoneurological Institute in Kharkiv, where he worked until 1944.[3]
Work at the Gorky Medical Institute
In 1944 Poznansky joined the Department of Psychiatry at the S. M. Kirov Gorky Medical Institute, where he successively held the positions of assistant and associate professor until 1959. In 1960 he defended his doctoral dissertation and moved on to head the Department of Psychiatry at the Bashkir State Medical Institute, which he led until 1970; he was awarded the title of professor in 1962.[3]
Scientific Work
Poznansky's scientific interests lay in general psychopathology and in clinical-experimental and psychopharmacological studies of hallucinatory, delusional, catatonic, and emotional syndromes in schizophrenia, traumatic psychoses, and other disorders. He authored more than 90 scientific works.[3]
Later Years and Memory
Alexander Semyonovich Poznansky died on 8 June 1974. He is buried at the Bugrovsky Cemetery.[3]
