Pozharsky Street is a street in the historical center of Nizhny Novgorod, located in the Upper Part. It runs through the area of the Zelensky Descent, by the The Kremlin, near the Nikolskaya Tower.
Location and surroundings
The street lies within a block of the city's historical center, forming part of the dense street network of the upper (hill) part: neighboring it are Malaya Pokrovskaya Street, Ilyinskaya, Rozhdestvenskaya, Varvarskaya, Alekseyevskaya, Gruzinskaya, Minin Street, Studyonaya, Belinsky Street and other historical streets. At the junction of Pozharsky Street and Theater Square, behind building No. 7 on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, the Moskva Hotel once stood, demolished in the 1990s.
Memorial sites
On Pozharsky Street lies the site where the St. Nicholas Church once stood. The church has not survived; the site, together with the adjoining Orthodox burial grounds, has been designated by the authorities of the Nizhny Novgorod Region a historic-preservation zone, the "Nikolskoye Cemetery." In 2013 a chapel-church was erected on the site. The street's name is linked to Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky, commander of the Nizhny Novgorod Militia of 1611-1612.
