The Piseral-Andreevka culture is an archaeological culture of the Middle Volga Region, dated to the 1st–3rd centuries AD. It is associated with sites discovered on the territory of Nizhny Novgorod Region and neighboring regions. Among the artifacts that specialists attribute to this culture are metal ornaments, including small bells.[1]

Dating and range

According to available data, the culture covers the period from approximately the 1st to the 3rd century AD.[1] The name is derived from place names in the Middle Volga Region. According to the atlas of Gornomariysky District of the Mari El Republic, the Piseral-Andreevka culture belongs to the Early Iron Age and is associated with nomadic tribes that appeared in the region during the period from the 1st millennium BC to the middle of the 1st millennium AD; during the same period, the Ananyino community and the textile-ceramic community coexisted in the territory, laying the foundations for the western Finnic-speaking peoples.[2] A number of sites and individual categories of material-culture objects are attributed to this culture — in particular, metal ornaments found during fieldwork in the region.

Finds

Among the objects attributed as Piseral-Andreevka is a bronze bell found in 2016 and initially posted for appraisal on the forum of the treasure-hunters' portal "Relikviya". According to the finder, the object was later donated to a museum. Early Iron Age sites attributed to the Piseral-Andreevka culture have been recorded in Gornomariysky District of the Mari El Republic: fortified settlements (gorodishche) near the villages of Kopan, Novaya Sloboda, Tokari (Malakhay) and the selo of Yemangashi, as well as camp sites and settlements near the selo of Yulyaly, the villages of Siukhino and Tokari, and the former village of Akozino.[2][1]
