The Society of Art Lovers was the first artists' organization in Nizhny Novgorod, active from 1901 to 1916.[1]
Foundation and Membership
The Society was founded on February 12, 1901. Among its founders were art photographers A. O. Karelin and M. P. Dmitriev, architects P. A. Dobrovolsky and P. P. Malinovsky, writer M. Gorky, and other prominent Nizhny Novgorod residents.[1]
Activities
During its existence, the Society held 18 exhibitions and regularly organized creative evenings.[2]
Significance
The Society of Art Lovers became the starting point for the organized artistic life of Nizhny Novgorod. In 2011, at the opening of the "Autumn Vernissage" held to mark the 110th anniversary of its founding, the Society's work was described as "a longstanding initiative" that is being carried on by the city's current professional artists' associations.[2]
