The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Advanced Training of Healthcare Specialists is a state autonomous institution of additional professional education of Nizhny Novgorod Region, operating since 1990. It provides retraining and advanced training for the region's mid-level medical personnel.[1]

History and Development

The official founding date is considered to be September 6, 1990. Two years earlier, the structure had existed as a continuing education department at the Sormovo Medical College; the department was headed by Evgeniya Ivanovna Kozina. The first director of the independent center was Lina Ruvimovna Gomozova, a candidate of medical sciences and a surgeon by specialty.[1]

For its first three years the center had no premises of its own and was housed at the Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital: in the first year the administration worked without a dedicated office, the documentation was kept at the director's home, and students were received in the main lobby; in the second year they were given a room of 9 sq. m. for four staff members; in the third, about 30 sq. m. for nine staff members. In 1994 the center moved to the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children's Clinical Hospital, where it first occupied four small rooms (the accounting office was located in the gymnasium) and then received an entire floor of more than 600 sq. m. in Building 4. It was from this point that the institution's methodological development began. In June 2011, by order of the Ministry of Property Relations of Nizhny Novgorod Region, two teaching buildings with a combined area of about 1,500 sq. m. were transferred into the center's ownership.[1]

Since December 1993 the center has been headed by Lyudmila Aleksandrovna Poklad, a doctor of economics and management and the chief freelance specialist in nursing management for the Ministry of Health of Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Volga Federal District.[1]

Educational Activities

More than 8,000 specialists with secondary medical education study at the center each year. Training is conducted through advanced training and professional retraining courses in 35 specialties, as well as 36 thematic refresher courses for employees of medical organizations of all forms of ownership.[1] Thematic refresher programs include "Vaccination," "Sanitary and Epidemiological Requirements for the Handling of Medical Waste," "Organization of Activities Related to the Circulation of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances," "Medical Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases and Promotion of a Healthy Lifestyle," "Improving the Provision of Medical Care to Patients with Vascular Diseases," and a number of others.[1]

Training in palliative care is a separate area of focus: the thematic refresher program on the pharmacotherapy of chronic pain syndrome is held at the Nizhny Novgorod hospice, which includes an inpatient unit and a mobile outreach service; a working group led by the hospice's head has developed a textbook for physicians and students of medical institutions.[1] The center also offers professional retraining programs, in particular in the specialty "Medical Optics."[3]

All educational programs were developed by the center's instructors on the basis of postgraduate training standards, using a competency-based approach.[1]
