The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children's Library named after T. A. Mavrina is a regional state cultural institution specializing in serving children and adolescents. The library bears the name of Tatyana Alekseyevna Mavrina — an outstanding Soviet book illustrator. Informally, the institution is often called "Mavrinka."[2] The library is located on Zvezdinka Street in Nizhny Novgorod.[2]

Activities

The library carries out systematic work with readers of all ages, from preschoolers to teenagers. Regular formats include thematic events, library lessons, and bookshelf meet-ups. Starting no later than 2024, the library has been hosting the International Online Campaign "Reading About the Blockade," timed to the anniversary of the complete lifting of the Siege of Leningrad: the fifth campaign, held from January 15 to March 4, was joined by educational institutions from other regions, including the Syzran Medical and Humanitarian College from Samara Region.[1]

One of the library's regular partners is the Volga-Vyatka Main Branch of the Bank of Russia (VVMB). Together with it, classes on historical financial literacy and personal finance are held. In September 2024, the "Library of Financial Knowledge" project launched for readers aged 5–6: VVMB experts told children about the history of monetary circulation, the origins of the names of money, exchange-rate and commemorative coins, and the rules for safely using payment cards; the young children were invited to assemble puzzles, study the images on coins, and design their own bank cards.[2] In addition, during the summer holidays on Zvezdinka Street, as part of the "Reading Square" project, VVMB staff hold interactive outdoor classes — a format that has existed for several years.[2]

Leadership and Status

As of 2024, the library's director was Natalya Bochkareva, an Honored Worker of Culture of Russia.[2]

Development Prospects

In 2026, the Regional Children's Library named after T. A. Mavrina was included among five institutions on the basis of which children's cultural and educational centers are planned to be established in Nizhny Novgorod Region. The same list includes the Chernoramensky Children's Library in Gidrotorf settlement of Balakhninsky Municipal District, the V. I. Chapayev Library of Nizhegorodsky District, the Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium named after G. M. Grechko, and the House of Culture of the selo of Shatovka near Arzamas. A total of 19 million rubles from the federal budget has been allocated for the modernization of these five centers; the opening of the updated spaces is scheduled for 2027. According to Natalya Sukhanova, the Minister of Culture of Nizhny Novgorod Region, the venues will be equipped with modern technology for the socialization and education of young Nizhny Novgorod residents.[3]
