Nizhny Novgorod Medical College (official name: State Budgetary Professional Educational Institution of Nizhny Novgorod Region "Nizhny Novgorod Medical College", GBPOU NO NMK) is an operating secondary vocational medical educational institution in Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1920. The main building is located at 9 Pavla Mochalova Street (Sormovo District, near the "Burevestnik" metro station).[1] The college presents itself as one of the largest institutions of secondary vocational education in Russia.[2]

History

The institution was founded in 1920 as an obstetrics technical school. It was subsequently transformed several times: into a medical polytechnic school (1931–1935), a paramedic-and-midwifery school (1935–1954), and a medical school (1954–1995). In 1995 the institution was granted college status.[2]

The first directors of the school were S. P. Dobrotin, M. F. Nemtsov, and G. V. Vinokurov. From 1942 to 1975 the permanent director was A. K. Mulyar, under whose leadership a significant number of mid-level medical workers were trained. From 1975 to 1995 the institution was headed by T. M. Saltsev, an Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation. In 1995–1996 the director was A. V. Razumovsky, Doctor of Medical Sciences and professor, during whose tenure work was carried out on reforming nursing care. From 1996 to 2014 the college was headed by V. P. Smirnov, People's Teacher of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In 2014 V. N. Grechko, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, was appointed director.[2]

In 2008 Nizhny Novgorod Medical School No. 2 and Nizhny Novgorod Medical School No. 3 were reorganized by merger into the college. By order of the Nizhny Novgorod Region government of October 16, 2013, No. 2112-r, the Bogorodsk Medical College and the Vetluga Medical School (technical school) became part of the college as branches. Since 2016 the institution has borne its current official name.[2]

Structure and Specializations

The college comprises three academic buildings in Nizhny Novgorod, a part-time (evening) department at the N. A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, branches in the towns of Vetluga and Bogorodsk, as well as branches at medical organizations of the Region — Pavlovo and Dzerzhinsk.[2]

The college has more than 4,000 students enrolled in 9 specialties: general medicine, midwifery, nursing, preventive medicine, laboratory diagnostics, pharmacy, preventive dentistry, orthopedic dentistry, and medical massage — for people with visual disabilities.[2] For 9th-grade students, six-month preparatory courses in Russian, chemistry, and biology are offered.[1]
