The Nizhny Novgorod Mathematical Society (NNMS) is a regional public organization that unites mathematicians of Nizhny Novgorod Region. It was registered on August 3, 1995 (registration certificate No. 773, order of the Justice Department of Nizhny Novgorod Region); OGRN 1035204612101, INN 5262042871.[3] The society's activities are aimed at coordinating mathematical research and developing mathematical education and outreach in the region.[2]

Founding

The idea of creating an independent association of mathematicians in Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) was discussed for several decades. The first real steps toward realizing it were taken by Professor D. A. Gudkov: his archive preserves fragments of correspondence from the 1970s with Moscow and Leningrad colleagues on this subject.[1] On April 19, 1995, an initiative group consisting of M. A. Antonets, E. I. Gordon, I. S. Emelyanova, G. M. Zhislin, M. I. Kuznetsov, G. M. Polotovsky, V. N. Shevchenko, and L. P. Shilnikov held the Founding Assembly, at which the NNMS Charter was adopted and governing bodies were elected. At its founding the society had 57 members; its first president was L. P. Shilnikov, its vice president M. I. Kuznetsov, and its academic secretary G. M. Polotovsky.[2]

Activities

The first scientific meeting was held on September 21, 1995, and was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Professor E. A. Leontovich-Andronova. Since then, meetings have been held monthly.[2] During its first 15 years, the society held 126 scientific meetings (on average more than 8 per year), at which 131 talks were presented; 71 of them were given by out-of-town speakers, including 22 by speakers from abroad. On average, about 23 attendees were present at each meeting.[1] The society's membership has not changed significantly since its founding, remaining in a dynamic equilibrium.[2]

In April 2010, together with Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod (UNN), the conference "15 Years of the Nizhny Novgorod Mathematical Society" was held at the Conference Center of the UNN Fundamental Library. The co-chairs of the organizing committee were UNN President R. G. Strongin and NNMS President L. M. Lerman. Mathematicians from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod universities took part in the conference — in particular, Yu. S. Ilyashenko (Moscow State University, Independent University of Moscow), N. A. Vavilov (Saint Petersburg State University), and D. V. Treshchev (Steklov Mathematical Institute).[1]

During the pandemic, the society's meetings were not held for more than two years. The first meeting after the break took place on March 17, 2022.[2]
