The Nizhny Novgorod Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation (NA MVD of Russia) is a state departmental higher education institution founded in 1927 and granted academy status in 2000. One of the largest law schools in Russia, it trains officers of the internal affairs bodies in legal and economic specialties. It is located at 3 Ankudinovskoe Highway, Nizhny Novgorod.[2]
History
The academy's origins go back to 1927: by decision of the Small Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR, a school for junior command personnel of the militia (police) was opened in Novosibirsk, known at first as the 7th NKVD School for Administrative and Militia Workers. In 1929, by order of the head of the republic's militia, the school was moved to Vladimir, and on April 12, 1930, the presidium of the Nizhny Novgorod Territorial Executive Committee gave its consent to the school's relocation to Nizhny Novgorod; from that year the institution was called the 7th School for Senior Command Personnel of the Workers' and Peasants' Militia of the GURKM under the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR.
Throughout the 1930s the school was renamed several times: in 1932 it became the 7th Nizhny Novgorod School of the Workers' and Peasants' Militia, in 1934 the Gorky Territorial School for Mid-Level Command Personnel of the Workers' and Peasants' Militia, in 1936 the Gorky School for Mid-Level Command Personnel of the Workers' and Peasants' Militia, in 1937 the 16th Gorky School of the Workers' and Peasants' Militia, and in 1939 the Gorky School of the Workers' and Peasants' Militia. During the Great Patriotic War, the institution was named the Gorky Militia School of the NKVD of the USSR.
On March 31, 1972 (by Order No. 0214 of the USSR Minister of Internal Affairs dated April 21, 1972), the Gorky Higher School of the MVD of the USSR was established on the basis of the school — "for training qualified personnel to combat the embezzlement of socialist property and speculation." With this, the institution received the status of a higher education institution. In 2000 it was reorganized into an academy of the MVD.[2]
Educational Activities
The academy offers training in several fields: "Law Enforcement Activity," "Economic Security," "Legal Support of National Security," "Ensuring Legality and Public Order," and "Jurisprudence." The institution has 5 faculties and 8 core educational programs. Specializations include the work of economic security and anti-Corruption units, criminal investigation, district police officers, preliminary investigation, and the legal service of the internal affairs bodies.[2] The average passing score for the 2026 admissions campaign was 245.4 points.[2]
Admission to the academy is possible in two ways: through the internal affairs body at the applicant's place of residence or through "direct recruitment." In both cases, candidates undergo a medical examination, professional psychological screening, and entrance examinations; documents are accepted until April 1 of the year of admission.[2] At the time the data was published, the academy had about 3,319 students, and it has a dormitory.
In 2026, the academy held its 51st graduation: 236 people received diplomas, 23 of them with honors. The ceremonial event took place on the grounds of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin at the Eternal Flame; the graduates were assigned to twelve territorial bodies and units of the MVD.[1]
