She graduated from the shipbuilding faculty of the Nikolaev Shipbuilding Institute (1930), becoming the first woman to receive a shipbuilding engineer's diploma from that institute.
Key facts of her career
Since 1938 she has worked at the Gorky Polytechnic Institute. In 1940 she defended her candidate's dissertation, and in 1948 her doctoral dissertation. From 1950 to 1975 she headed the department of "Theory and Structural Mechanics of the Ship" at the shipbuilding faculty of the Gorky Polytechnic Institute. Honorary member of the Academician A. N. Krylov Scientific and Technical Society. The first woman at the Polytechnic Institute to earn the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences and the title of professor.
Main area of scholarly work
Vibration and dynamic strength of ship structures. She devoted more than six scholarly monographs and a textbook to this problem. The vibration laboratory at the department is named after her. The fundamental "Study Handbook on the Strength of Inland Waterway Vessels", of which N. V. Mattes was one of the authors, went through three editions.
