Karmona-Korso Nadezhda Vitalyevna — phthisiologist and pulmonologist, chief physician of the Pavlovo Anti-Tuberculosis Dispensary from 2001 to 2010, and the last head of that institution as an independent legal entity. She was born in Gorky; she spent four years working as a general practitioner in Peru, after which she returned to Pavlovsky District and settled there: in 2024 through early 2026 she conducted phthisiological consultations in Pavlovo, and also sees patients as a general practitioner and pulmonologist in Vorsma. Biography
Born on 15 October in Gorky. [1] Sources differ on her higher education: according to some, she graduated from the Second Moscow Medical Institute named after N. I. Pirogov in 1985 [1]; according to others, she graduated from Gorky Medical Institute in 1983 with a specialization in General Medicine. [3]
From 1986 to 1990 she worked as a general practitioner in Peru and from 1987 to 1989 was a member of the local League Against Tuberculosis. [1] On her return, in 1990 she joined the Pavlovsky tuberculosis dispensary as a phthisiatrician, became deputy chief physician in 1998, and in 2001 was appointed head of the dispensary. Its dispensary
The tuberculosis dispensary in Pavlovo was established in December 1924 by Dr. Pyotr Nikolayevich Makovsky, the city's first public health commissar; tuberculosis was particularly widespread in the metalworking district, where the grinding shops were nicknamed "kilns." [5]
In 2002, in the second year of Karmona-Korso's tenure, the dispensary moved to a new building at 2 Privokzalnaya Street; it housed a 40-bed inpatient unit for tuberculosis patients and an outpatient clinic for adults and children. [5] That same year, 2002, marked the peak of the epidemic that had spread throughout the 1990s: tuberculosis incidence in Pavlovo reached 62 cases per 100,000 residents, with a prevalence rate of 213. The state healthcare institution of Nizhny Novgorod Region, the "Pavlovo Tuberculosis Dispensary," was registered on November 9, 2005, at the address Pavlovo, 2 Privokzalnaya Street; Karmona-Korso was listed as chief physician from its very first day. [2]
In the autumn of 2009, the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Health, by orders dated September 9 and 14, initiated the merger of the dispensary into a larger institution; notice of the reorganization was entered into the register on October 21, 2009, and the transfer deed was signed on December 29. [2] On February 17, 2010, the dispensary ceased to exist as a legal entity, becoming part of the state healthcare institution "Dzerzhinsky Tuberculosis Dispensary." [2][6]
The entire district phthisiatric service in two weeks
The Pavlovo dispensary was not alone: over the two weeks spanning late February and early March 2010, district and city tuberculosis dispensaries throughout the Nizhny Novgorod Region ceased to exist as independent legal entities. [6]
The purpose of the restructuring was consolidation: the district dispensaries were retained as subdivisions of several lead institutions, and the Region's phthisiatric service was reduced to a handful of centers. The Pavlovo dispensary became one of five branches of the Dzerzhinsky dispensary — alongside those in Balakhna, Bogorodsk, Gorodets, and Kulebaki — and remained at its former address at 2 Privokzalnaya Street. What happened next
By 2014, the epidemic situation in Pavlovsky District had improved markedly: compared with 2002, the incidence rate had fallen by half, to 31 per 100,000, and the prevalence rate had dropped to 100 per 100,000 residents; 61.5% of the district's population had undergone preventive fluorography, and for the first time in many years there were no tuberculosis cases among children and adolescents. In December 2014, the Pavlovo anti-tuberculosis service marked its 90th anniversary. [5]
The Dzerzhinsky anti-tuberculosis dispensary, which took on Pavlovo's legacy, held out for another sixteen years: on 27 January 2026 it too ceased operations, joining the state budgetary healthcare institution "Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Center of Phthisiopulmonology." [8] In the routing scheme of the regional center, whose main building is located in Nizhny Novgorod, the Pavlovo building at Privokzalnaya, 2 is listed as Branch No. 10 and serves adults and children of Pavlovsky District. Current activities
Carmona-Corso continues to work in Pavlovsky District. According to the schedule of the Pavlovo branch of the Dzerzhinsky dispensary for 2024 through early 2026, she saw patients as a phthisiologist — in the adult phthisiology consulting room on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, in the children's consulting room on Thursdays, and on Wednesdays she had a district outreach day. She also sees patients at the Formula Zdorovya (Formula of Health) clinic in Vorsma as a general practitioner and pulmonologist; she obtained her specialist certificate in pulmonology in 2015. [3]
