MiG-19 is a Soviet supersonic fighter designed by the Mikoyan and Gurevich Design Bureau (OKB), and the first production aircraft in the USSR capable of reaching supersonic speed in level flight. The prototype (SM-9/1) first took to the air on January 5, 1954; series production ran from 1955 to 1957.[1] In NATO aviation, the aircraft was given the reporting name Farmer-A.[1] The MiG-19's direct connection to the Nizhny Novgorod area is its production at Gorky Aircraft Plant No. 21 (now the Sokol Plant), which built the majority of all machines produced.[1]
Design and Flight Characteristics
The aircraft follows a classic layout — a monoplane with retractable landing gear and swept wings. The powerplant consists of two RD-9B turbojet engines, each with a maximum thrust of 25.50 kN without afterburner and 31.87 kN with afterburner.[1] The empty weight of the aircraft is 5,298 kg, and the maximum takeoff weight is 8,572 kg. The wingspan is 9.00 m, the length is 12.54 m, and the height is 3.88 m.[1] The maximum speed reached 1,450 km/h at an altitude of 10,000 m, the rate of climb was 115 m/s, the service ceiling was 17,500 m, and the range with PTB-760 drop tanks was up to 2,200 km.[1] Armament included three NR-23 cannons with 201 rounds of ammunition, two ORO-57K unguided rocket pods, and bombs of up to 250 kg caliber.[1]
Production in Gorky
Of the 401 production MiG-19s built, the majority — 258 aircraft — came from the Ordzhonikidze Gorky Aircraft Plant No. 21: 139 aircraft were delivered in 1955, 118 in 1956, and one more in 1957.[1] The remaining 143 aircraft were built at the Chkalov Novosibirsk Aircraft Plant No. 153 in 1956.[1] Thus, the Gorky plant served as the lead manufacturer for the MiG-19, just as it had shortly before been the lead manufacturer for the MiG-17. An early-production MiG-19 from Plant No. 21 (tail number "405") has been preserved as an exhibit.[1]
Monument in Nizhny Novgorod
In the Moskovsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, a MiG-19 aircraft stands on a pedestal, classified as a monument to technology.[2] The machine is a reminder of the role of the Gorky Aircraft Plant in producing this type.
