Maxim Yurievich Emelyanychev (born August 28, 1988, Dzerzhinsk, Gorky Region) is a Russian conductor and performer on historical keyboard instruments (harpsichord, hammerklavier). He received his early musical education in Nizhny Novgorod and later gained international renown as a specialist in the Baroque repertoire and the music of the Viennese classics.[4]
Nizhny Novgorod Years
Emelyanychev was born into a family of musicians in Dzerzhinsk.[4] He received his early musical education at the Nizhny Novgorod Boys' Choral Chapel. He first stood at the conductor's podium at the age of 12.[4] He then studied at the Balakirev Nizhny Novgorod Music College: conducting with A. M. Skulsky and piano with V. G. Starynin.[4]
Education and Career
After the Nizhny Novgorod college, he entered the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, first as a pianist and organist, and then studied opera and symphonic conducting under Professor G. N. Rozhdestvensky; he graduated from the conservatory in 2011.[2][4] At the same time, he studied harpsichord and hammerklavier with Maria Uspenskaya, and also specialized in historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (the Basel academy of early music).[3][4]
He began his professional career as a harpsichordist, collaborating with the ensembles Il Giardino Armonico and Cantus Cölln.[3] In 2016, he made his debut as a conductor with the musicAeterna orchestra, where he worked as an assistant to Teodor Currentzis.[3] Since 2018, he has been principal guest conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.[3] He is the artistic director and conductor of the Veritas Chamber Orchestra at the Moscow Conservatory.[2]
Baroque and Viennese classicism hold a special place in Emelyanychev's repertoire: under his direction, a number of forgotten works by Haydn and Mozart were performed for the first time in more than two hundred years. He is a laureate of international competitions, including the Hans von Bülow Competition for pianist-conductors.[3][4]
