Maryina Roshcha is a historic cemetery in the Soviet District of Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1938. On the side facing the city it is bounded by Nartova Lane and Kladbishchensky Passage. It adjoins the "Zavety Michurina" gardening cooperative. It arose on the site of a forest of the same name covering a total of 258 hectares.

In 1999 the Church of All Saints was consecrated on the grounds of "Maryina Roshcha".

Today the cemetery is not being expanded. Burials are permitted in family graves and, as an exception, for well-known residents of Nizhny Novgorod.

History

"Maryina Roshcha" has been known since the 17th century. In documents of that time this territory bears the name "Maryino wasteland". According to tradition, the grove was given its name after ataman-woman Marya, who robbed travelers on the road from Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow.

A year after its founding, in 1939, plots were set aside on the cemetery grounds for a Jewish cemetery and a Tatar cemetery.

During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, soldiers of the Red Army who died in hospitals were buried at the cemetery, numbering several thousand people. The mass military burials of the Great Patriotic War period form a separate avenue and serve as a place of remembrance.

  • Leshchinsky, Vladimir Mikhailovich — first director of the Nizhny Novgorod Radio Laboratory).
  • Lukinskaya, Vera Viktorovna (1900–1989) — piano teacher, lived in the city of Gorky. Founder and, for many years, director of Music School No. 11 for all population groups in Sormovo (Gorky). Sister of sculptor A. V. Kikin.
  • Naravtsevich, Boris Abramovich — noted Soviet theater director, People's Artist of the RSFSR, chief director of the Voronezh Young Spectator's Theater in 1963–1966, of the Ryazan Young Spectator's Theater in 1966–1970, and of the Gorky Young Spectator's Theater in 1970–1986.
  • Nesterov, Arkady Alexandrovich — Soviet composer, People's Artist of the RSFSR.
  • Palmov, Alexander Savvich — Honored Physician of the RSFSR, Hero of Labor
  • Sivukhin, Lev Konstantinovich — Soviet and Russian choral and orchestral conductor, teacher, People's Artist of Russia.
  • Tereshkov, Alexei Dmitrievich — participant of the First World War, the Civil War, and the Great Patriotic War. For bravery shown during the First World War he was awarded three St. George Crosses. He took part in establishing Soviet power in Belarus after the October Revolution. During the Civil War he commanded a partisan detachment and was a company commander in the Bogunsky Regiment under the Red commander Nikolai Shchors. During the Great Patriotic War, Major General Tereshkov commanded the 413th Rifle Division, then the 38th Rifle Corps. For exemplary command of the corps in the Vistula–Oder Offensive and for personal courage shown, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
  • Fedorenko, Anatoly Pavlovich — police major, legendary traffic police inspector of Nizhny Novgorod, who devoted 34 years of service to the city's roads and, in his final years, served as warden of Nizhny Novgorod's central street, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya.
  • Khlibko Nikolai Selivestrovich — Soviet theater actor and teacher, participant of the Great Patriotic War, Honored Artist of the RSFSR.
  • Khrynov, Alexei Yevgenyevich (Alexei "Polkovnik") — well-known Russian rock musician, singer-songwriter, leader of the band "Polkovnik i Odnopolchane" ("The Colonel and His Comrades-in-Arms"), radio host
  • Chernov, Kirill Prokofyevich — participant of the Great Patriotic War, major general of artillery, Hero of the Soviet Union.

Memorials of "Maryina Roshcha"

  • In 1965 a memorial to military valor was unveiled here in honor of fallen soldiers. Many figures of science and art, and prominent military commanders of Nizhny Novgorod, are buried at the cemetery. According to some accounts, there are also clergy graves here.
  • In 1997 a memorial was opened in memory of soldiers from Nizhny Novgorod who fell in Chechnya on March 6, 1996.
  • In 2002 a memorial was opened in memory of the submariners who tragically died aboard the nuclear submarine K-141 Kursk in 2000.
  • In 2004, with the participation of the Hungarian embassy in Russia, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the cemetery to soldiers and officers of the Royal Hungarian Army.
  • On September 17, 2009, a memorial plaque to the victims of political repression shot on the grounds of Maryina Roshcha in 1941–1945 was installed at the cemetery entrance.

Interesting facts

  • The "Maryina Roshcha" forest tract is protected by the state as a reference stand of zonal broadleaf forests of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The city necropolis occupies only part of this tract.
