"Steam Locomotives of Russia" is a free open-air museum of railway equipment located in the Sortirovochny settlement of the Kanavinsky district of Nizhny Novgorod. The site has been operating since at least the 2010s; admission is free.[1]
Collection
The museum's exhibition features 15 steam locomotives produced in Russia, the USSR, and other countries during the 20th century. The machines are mounted on rails, with tiled paths laid between them. As of 2019, the collection had not been expanded: no new exhibits had appeared beyond the previously displayed locomotives, a platform model, and the freight cars next to it. The equipment receives minimal upkeep — touch-up painting and minor repairs.[1]
Visiting
The museum is aimed primarily at families: children can climb into the cabs and run around the grounds. The minimum viewing time is about 20 minutes, or an hour to an hour and a half with children. There are no descriptive plaques for the exhibits on site, which makes it difficult to learn about the machines' technical specifications without a guided tour or guidebook. The easiest way to reach the museum is by private car: its location in Sortirovochny makes a trip by public transport with children inconvenient. Lake Sortirovochnoye lies next to the site, making it possible to combine the visit with time by the water.[1]
