The Biological Station of Lobachevsky University (UNN) is a field research subdivision of the university, located on the shores of the Pustynskiye Lakes near the village of Staraya Pustyn in the Arzamas District of Nizhny Novgorod Region. It is used as a base for field biological and ecological research.
Location and natural surroundings
The biological station is located on the shores of the karst Pustynskiye Lakes — a system of water bodies in the floodplain of the Serezha River, a right tributary of the Tyosha. The area is notable for its karst terrain: the surroundings are known for karst fissures and caves. Nearby the biological station are located the children's ecological camp "Dzhungli" ("Jungle") and a cardiology sanatorium.
Research activities
The biological station serves as a base for field research conducted by UNN staff and students. The Pustynskiye Lakes, with their karst origin and variety of floodplain habitats, provide conditions for observations in hydrobiology, ecology, and related disciplines.
