On October 6, 2026, a mandatory mask requirement was introduced in medical institutions of Nizhny Novgorod Region. The decision was made by the regional Ministry of Health amid rising rates of respiratory infections.[1]

Circumstances of the introduction

The restrictions were prompted by the tense epidemiological situation in the region. According to Rospotrebnadzor, more than 15,000 cases of acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) were registered in Nizhny Novgorod Region during the week of September 21–27, 2026; rhinovirus and parainfluenza were the dominant pathogens.[2] In late September, three kindergartens closed entirely for quarantine, and in another 23 preschool institutions and 11 schools classes were partially suspended.[3]

The mask requirement applies to all visitors and staff of hospitals and outpatient clinics; no requirement to wear masks outdoors was introduced.[3] The introduction of the requirement was first reported by Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the medical outlet "Stationar-press," on his Telegram channel; according to him, some patients had begun wearing protective masks even before the official orders.[4] The Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Health confirmed the measure, stating its purpose as ensuring the safety of patients and staff and preventing the spread of respiratory infections.[1]

Previous experience

A similar mask requirement had already been introduced in the region's medical institutions in December 2025 — at that time it was prompted by a sharp rise in ARVI and influenza cases, with the so-called Hong Kong variant of the virus predominating among the circulating strains.[4] No information on how long the restrictions introduced in October 2026 would last had been received at the time they were announced.[3]
