The G. A. Razuvaev Institute of Organometallic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOMC RAS) is an academic research institute in Nizhny Novgorod working in the field of organometallic chemistry. Its history dates to 1963, when the Laboratory for Polymer Stabilization of the USSR Academy of Sciences was established in Gorky at the initiative of Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Grigory Alekseyevich Razuyaev — the first institution of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Gorky region. Since 2018 it has been under the authority of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.[1]

History

The Laboratory for Polymer Stabilization of the USSR Academy of Sciences (LPS USSR AS) was opened by a resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dated 5 March 1963; its first director was G. A. Razuvaev.[1] In 1969 the laboratory was transformed into the Institute of Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Resolution No. 664 of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, dated 11 July 1969). The Institute of Chemistry existed in the form of two departments: the Department of Organometallic Chemistry headed by Academician G. A. Razuvaev, and the Department of Chemistry of High-Purity Substances headed by Academician G. G. Devyatykh.[1]

In October 1988 the Institute of Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences was reorganized into two independent institutions: the Institute of Organometallic Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Chemistry of High-Purity Substances of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Directive of the USSR Council of Ministers dated 6 August 1988, No. 1582-r; Resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dated 25 October 1988, No. 1152). Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences G. A. Abakumov was appointed director of the new institute; G. A. Razuvaev was granted the status of Honorary Director.[1]

In accordance with the Decree of the President of the RSFSR dated 21 November 1991, No. 228, the institute became part of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the name of the Institute of Organometallic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOMC RAS). In January 1995, by Resolution of the Presidium of the RAS dated 31 January 1995, No. 32, the institute was named after Academician Grigory Alekseyevich Razuvaev.[1]

In September 2013, in the course of the RAS reform (Federal Law No. 253-FZ of 27 September 2013), the institute was transferred to the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FASO Russia). Following the dissolution of FASO in 2018, by Order of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 2993-r of 27 June 2018, IOMC RAS was placed under the authority of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.[1]

Status and Assessments

By Order of FASO Russia No. 157 of 30 March 2018, the institute was assigned the first (highest) category among scientific organizations carrying out research, development, and technological work for civilian purposes. Following a meeting of the interdepartmental commission on 22 April 2021, IOMC RAS was included in the list of the country's leading scientific organizations.[1]

Research Activities

The institute conducts research in organometallic chemistry, including the chemistry of element-organic compounds. As of 2026, the director of the institute is RAS Academician I. L. Fedyushkin, and the deputy director is RAS Corresponding Member A. V. Piskunov.[2]

In 2026, researchers at the IOMC RAS developed a highly efficient heterobimetallic precatalyst based on calcium and sodium, enabling the isomerization of terminal olefin double bonds with a high level of regio- and E-stereocontrol. The study was carried out with support from Russian Science Foundation grant No. 23-73-10148 in collaboration with INEOS RAS (Moscow); the results were published in the journal Chemical Science (impact factor 8.1).[2]
