The Museum and Tourist Complex "Grad Kitezh" (City of Kitezh) is a cultural and tourist site in the selo of Vladimirskoye in Voskresensky District, Nizhny Novgorod Region, located near Lake Svetloyar. The complex is dedicated to the legend of the invisible city of Kitezh and to the history of the Nizhny Novgorod land. Address: Sovetskaya Street, 51.[2]
Layout and Exhibitions
The complex includes several facilities. The central building is designed as a stylized princely terem (tower-house), its walls decorated with fairy-tale-themed paintings by the artist Leonid Kolosov.[2] Exhibitions and cultural events are held here; guests are welcomed in the old tradition — with bread and salt, honey sbiten (a hot spiced drink), and a treat of Vetluga fish pies known as "rybniki".[4]
The separate Kitezh History and Art Museum introduces visitors to the history of the Nizhny Novgorod land, as well as to folk crafts and trades: pottery, flax processing, weaving, carpentry, and the making of rogozha (bast matting). Its collection includes ceramic items inspired by Slavic mythology and the Christian religion, as well as photographs, documents, books, and ethnographic objects.[1][4] The hall devoted to Svetloyar presents materials from scientific expeditions that studied the lake — its natural features and the origins of the Kitezh legend.[4]
The complex also includes the Optical Theater — reportedly the only facility of its kind in Russia. It is designed to present illusions that recreate bygone eras and historical events; a distinctive feature of the theater is the psychotherapeutic effect of its unified stream of light and sound.[1]
Significance and Development Plans
The complex is part of a tourist route through Voskresensky Zavolzhye: tour groups visit the history and art museum, the terem (a traditional tower-like Russian mansion), Svetloyar Lake, and the nearby Svetloyarskoye eco-farm in the Voskresenskoye Povetluzhye Nature Park.[4] The creation of the Grad Kitezh ("City of Kitezh") complex as a whole was assessed by Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Valery Shantsev as an event comparable in significance for the Voskresensky District to the Olympic Games for Sochi: it was expected that the complex would make it possible to hold world-class festivals and would become a tourist magnet in its own right for the region, no less attractive than the Diveevo pilgrimage destination.[1]
