Georgy Vladimirovich Rabkov (1941, Nizhny Novgorod — October 2, 2026, Nizhny Novgorod) — a Nizhny Novgorod journalist and media manager, editor-in-chief of the newspapers Leninskaya Smena and Nizhegorodsky Rabochiy, Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation. He passed away in his 86th year after a prolonged illness.[1][2]
Career
Rabkov began his professional path with a technical education at a polytechnic institute, after which he devoted his life to journalism.[2] During the 1970s–1980s he rose from an ordinary staff member to editor of the newspaper Leninskaya Smena — one of the best-known publications in Soviet Gorky.[2] From 1987 to 1998 he headed the editorial office of the newspaper Nizhegorodsky Rabochiy.[2]
Following his editorial career, Rabkov moved into public service: he worked as deputy head of the press service of the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region and headed the regional committee for press affairs within the regional government.[1][3] He was elected a deputy of the City Council, as well as a delegate to congresses of the Union of Journalists of the USSR and the Union of Journalists of Russia.[1]
Awards
Rabkov was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation and the USSR Press Excellence badge.[1][3] The Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, expressed condolences on the occasion of his passing, noting the journalist's significant contribution to the development of the region's media community.[3]
Legacy
Several generations of journalists who had received their professional training under Rabkov's guidance remembered him as a mentor.[1][3] The farewell ceremony took place on October 4, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at the Spasskaya Church at Gorky Street, 177a; the burial was held at Marina Roscha Cemetery.[1][2]
