Talanova Galina (pen name of Galina Borisovna Bochkova) — writer, author of books of poetry and prose. Lives in Nizhny Novgorod.

The essence

Author of collections of poetry and prose.

The fragile and always difficult relations between two people; the eternal search for the unattainable; the pursuit of the mirage of a meteorite that has flashed past; the hope for a miracle and illusions that vanish like burning paper, leaving neither warmth nor light; the sandcastles of a home crumbling under the raw winds of life, the bitter aftertaste of disappointments — these are Galina Talanova's themes. The sensual sets off a whimsical tangle of associations, and perception moves deeper, growing all the sharper for it.

Biography

Galina Borisovna Bochkova was born in The City of Gorky. She finished school No. 25 with a gold medal and graduated with honours from the biological faculty of Lobachevsky University, specialising in biophysics.

She worked at the Gorky branch of the Institute of Biophysics of the USSR Ministry of Health, where she studied the effect of microwave electromagnetic field irradiation on bioluminescence. She then worked at the Gorky Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, where she dealt with problems of membrane filtration of blood preparations. In 1992 she defended a dissertation on this subject at the Research and Design Institute of Applied Biochemistry in Moscow for the academic degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences.

In 1995, because of the sharp reduction in state budget funding, she was compelled to move to OOO NPO Diagnostic Systems, where to this day she is engaged in the development and production of diagnostic test systems for detecting hepatitis C virus infection. Author of more than 50 scientific works, including papers presented at international congresses and symposia in Paris, Glasgow, Copenhagen, Washington, San Antonio, Vienna, Milan, Frankfurt am Main, Venice, Berlin and Barcelona.

Member of the Union of Writers of Russia. Laureate of the Boldino Autumn prize (2012), of the Sever magazine prize (2012), of the M. Gorky prize (Nizhny Novgorod, 2016), laureate of the international de Richelieu competition (2016, 2017) for the novels “Blue Ocean” and “Running on the Edge”, of the Nizhny Novgorod Prize (2018) for the novel “Fireflies in the Wind”, gold laureate of the international competition “Her Majesty the Book!” (Germany, 2016) and gold diploma winner of the VII International Slavic Literary Forum “Zolotoy Vityaz” (2016) for the book of poems “Through the Snows Drifted in the Springs”, laureate of the prize of the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius (2016), diploma winner of the international O. Mother — Elvira Bochkova, poetess

On her writing

Alexander Aseyevsky:

For all the composure and focus of the poetess's verse on the story of her heroine's dramatic love (and is genuine love ever any other kind?), on the flow, continuing from poem to poem, of the emotional, sensual living-through of life's parabola of love, the attentive reader of Galina Talanova's poetry discovers unexpected things. How she is able to feel the sea, a thunderstorm, summer and winter, the forest, the river, the blades of grass swaying in the wind. Most often these are five or seven words, two or three lines set into a poem, but they are traced and inscribed with a conquering capaciousness and a glimmer of heartfelt insight.

And the urban landscapes and their signs, scattered through the poetess's verse — together with the traditional poetic “attributes” of love — recreate the living, dynamic, restless world of today. I know, it is known to me, that some women who read Galina Talanova's poems reread them from memory, because they find in them something like their own fate, because for them these poems are a charm and an incantation for their own life and destiny. Of Galina Talanova's poetry one can say quite honestly that it is steeped in the currents of a pure heart and — I cannot resist even a lofty comparison — is like a crystal brook spilling and running somewhere on our boundless Russian plains.

Her convincing concentration on the most important manifestation of humanity — love, lonely, unrequited, now weeping, now soaring to the heavens, the love of a woman's heart — these are the pages in the poetic kingdom that no one will ever tire of reading. One need only accept with the same open heart what is said by those chosen few who are sent to breathe upon humanity a golden dream of the most beautiful thing there is in the world...

Margarita Palshina (Germany):

Galina Talanova's poetry is hard to describe, to define, to assign to one poetic movement or another. These are pictures of existence, fragile as a dream, multicoloured pieces of a mosaic of stained-glass windows of feelings and emotions. But her lyric poetry is precise and easy to take in: through the fine tracery of emotions there appears the philosophical side of life, the distinct image of the seemingly elusive running of time. (Zarubezhnye zadvorki. - 2016.- No. 28.- P. 110.)

Tatyana Shcheglova (Germany):

...With the years, good people with a large soul inevitably reflect on how many unwritten pages are left in the strict Book of Being — reflect in their soul or on paper. Galina, unlike many, has been luckier in this. She is a talented and sensitive poet, and so her reflections will be heard, and the light of her soul will help someone.( Zarubezhnye zadvorki. - 2016.- No. 25.- P. 114.)

Lyudmila Sipko (Ukraine):

...The aphoristic quality of many of Galina Talanova's lines of verse is obvious. This is one more proof of her outstanding poetic talent. Her works are filled with original artistic devices, among which the main role belongs to metaphors: the tear-stained square of a window, a leaden cloud of phrases, the ladles of palms, sticky heat, the joints of greying aspens, a straw of sadness, the hothouse of the soul and many others. Nor is Talanova a dilettante in versification — she has a brilliant command of all poetic metres and arranges the works within a collection skilfully, creating the necessary through-going poetic rhythm. Indeed, talented people have not died out in Rus! ( Vertikal. – 2012. – Iss. 37. – P. 173-178.)

Lyudmila Sipko (Ukraine):

...In “Solo Voyage” heterogeneous stylistic currents are inseparably mixed: the diary-like nakedness of fact and deep philosophical meditation, a leaning towards “documentary authenticity” and whimsical associative imagery, sharp emotional surges and the cold rationality of the narration. It was precisely at the junction of these divergent artistic devices that an individual authorial prose genre was born... The individual style of the author of “Solo Voyage” cannot but astonish by the richness and variety of its artistic speech. Possibly this is connected in a certain way with the fact that Galina Talanova is not only a prose writer but also an original poet. Even in prose she remains faithful to her poetic thinking, which tints “Solo Voyage” in lyrical tones... The bold innovation in genre, the stylistic and compositional experiments, the unconventional devices for expressing the author's position — all this allows the novella to be placed among the best works of contemporary Russian prose. ( Sever. – 2013. – No. 9-10. – P. 226-229.)

Lyudmila Sipko (Ukraine):

“Everyday” associations are suddenly replaced by philosophical reflections on the eternal, often taking the form of aphorisms: “Loneliness is a time to think”, “A life with the feeling of loneliness in a crowd”, “Age is the burden of the unfulfilled and the unattainable”, “Age is what everyone already knows while you still have no idea”, “To survive, one has to build illusions” and others. So-called “ornamented” prose, based on metaphorical and associative types of connection and subject to the influence of poetic structures, has become an inseparable part of Galina Talanova's style. Saturated imagery with inlays of alliteration, a sense of inner rhythm, elements of hyperbole and the grotesque, deliberately cumbersome syntactic constructions — all this is especially characteristic of Talanova's interiors and landscapes. Galina Talanova's “Blue Ocean” is an out-of-the-ordinary book that goes beyond the usual stereotypes. ( Vertikal. – 2013. – Iss. 41. – P. 185-193.)

Blue Ocean

From the author:

A black stretch, a light stretch… Light and shadows, overtaking one another, create their own ever-changing, fanciful pattern on the wall, whose content can only be guessed at from the blurred dark imprint on the rough wall of a room bathed in moonlight, or on a curtain lit from within by the soft orange light seeping through a translucent lampshade. So it was before. So it is now as well. Only nowadays new walls have appeared in our life, on which we leave our shadows or our breath, or else write, in clear and regular letters, messages to those idly strolling along the Blue Ocean of the Internet. We throw out unsealed bottles with electronic papyrus inside, in the secret hope that someone plying the Ocean will fish them out.

Or else we vainly try to read another person's life from fragmentary phrases and photographs, in search of a kindred soul. This is a book about loneliness: loneliness together, loneliness in a crowd, which casts us into long swims across the Blue Ocean. But the return to the sinful shore is always inevitable. This is a book about the impossibility of loving, because there is simply not enough strength left for love ― we wear ourselves out chasing our daily bread in our constant striving to match the image of the successful hero of the present time, who has adapted with tenacious roots to survive in any soil, waterless and densely overgrown with thorns… Living is frightening!.. Constantly running up against insoluble problems on the ground, we again seek shelter in the boundless expanse of the "responsive" and lulling Ocean.

Anna Kuznetsova on Galina Talanova's novel "Blue Ocean"// Знамя.-2011.-№ 2:

The author renders psychology pliantly and without wearying the reader, the heroine is a person with a palpable individuality, and the blue ocean is the Internet, which works fruitfully with the problem of loneliness. The problem is not solved, but its acuteness is taken off — evening after evening a person spends in virtual communication that is no poorer in the richness of its emotional spectrum than the real kind. In reality he is alone as before, but no longer suffers from it, because he "lives on the net", as one of the heroine's interlocutors put it. And of those living on the net there are already no fewer than there are fish in the ocean. Their loved ones fall ill and die, children are born without arms, everything terrible that makes life a tragedy happens, but all of it is behind them, and before their face is the blue ocean with its cool wave...

Running Along the Edge

Galina Talanova's novel «Running Along the Edge» is again a novel about loneliness, but now not about loneliness in a crowd and not about loneliness together, but about a boundless loneliness, when nothing can any longer be changed or rewritten… This is a book about the running of one driven in circles and along the edge, when the running grows ever slower and breathing ever harder… This is a book about a love that is calm and full-flowing, like a lowland river in whose depths underwater springs seethe, imperceptibly boring out the funnel of a murky whirlpool; and about a love like a mountain stream that knocks you off your feet and kills you against the sharp rocks in its path.

This is a book about death, about a succession of sudden losses that, like a snowball, came rolling down the mountain when life had taken shape and settled into its rut. Where and when did the heroine lose her footing as she walked along the ice-covered brink of the abyss, and why did they clutch at the stone on which her loved ones were sitting? Left alone at the edge, she seemed to draw and draw her memories out of the river lake of the subconscious and could not pull them all the way out, like heavy glittering nets stuffed with living fish tangled in them…

Fireflies in the Wind

The epigraphs to the novel's four parts are Japanese haiku about fireflies, conveying the philosophical meaning of each part. The image of fireflies flickering in the night accompanies the heroine throughout the whole narrative. The Japanese considered fireflies to be the souls of departed ancestors. It was believed that the bright glow of these insects penetrates to the very heart and lights up the longing of love. This is a book about love, about death, about loneliness. The image of fireflies that once flared up in the night accompanies the heroine through all four parts of the novel, across which her whole life passes. This is a novel about how the darkest stretch can be lit up by letting into it the light from our past, flashing like fireflies in the dark forest of our life, and about how the expectation of a miracle always turns out to be stronger than the event itself, while life is shorter than we had thought. Nothing can be held in one's palms… And only love and beloved people, who, though they have gone with no hope of returning, leave within our heart a glowing arc of light. This is a book about how one must live so as to leave light in people's hearts.

The Red Moon

«The Red Moon» is a novel about love, about irreplaceable losses and about the end that inevitably awaits each of us, despite our eternal expectation of a miracle; a novel full of the sense of the fullness and the tragedy of being, conveyed through the language of poetic images. In ancient times the appearance of the Blood Moon instilled fear and horror, since people believed that the appearance of such a phenomenon was nothing other than a portent of the end of the world. It was held that this time was truly sacred, for the moon dies and fills with blood. On the night of the Blood Moon the inhabitants were not to leave their homes, and the windows were curtained with thick cloth so as not to let in the scarlet devilish light.

To appease the angered Gods and to prolong the life of humankind, on the night of the Blood Moon the tribes offered a sacrifice, giving the Gods the dearest and most precious thing they had: a newly born infant or a young girl chosen to become the betrothed of the Gods. A rare spectacle, which not everyone manages to see even once in a lifetime… Yet before the novel's heroine the blood moon, resembling a head that has been scalped, wrapped in a black mourning shawl of clouds, appears again and again, warning her of the next dramatic turn of fate: a new love, married life with a husband old enough to be her father, a tango embrace with her own mother, a car crash, a game of "run or die", the appearance of a son in her life and his loss, a change of social status and the "state house". The moon spills out an anxiety that gushes like blood from a severed vessel, but it is not always possible to change life as one would wish...
