GAZ-3103 was a prospective passenger car from the Gorky Automobile Plant, developed in the late 1980s as a shortened version in the family of new executive-class Volgas. The model never reached series production and remained at the project stage.
Place in the GAZ-3105 family
The GAZ-3103 was developed in tandem with the GAZ-3104 as a shorter and less expensive alternative to the flagship GAZ-3105. While the senior model was designed as an all-wheel-drive car with a fundamentally new 3.4-liter V8 engine, the GAZ-3103 and GAZ-3104 were meant to be fitted with the promising 16-valve ZMZ-406 engine.[1]
Fate of the project
Work on the family began while the city was still Gorky, but the plant started production in Nizhny Novgorod, amid the collapse of the Soviet industrial system and an acute shortage of funding. Small-batch production of the GAZ-3105 was established only with great difficulty, while the more affordable versions, the GAZ-3103 and GAZ-3104, never got beyond the design stage.[1]
